| Stone's Point - A Little Piece Heaven|
|Reviewed on July 28th, 2020|
|My family has been coming up to Rainy Lake my entire life and with COVID, we were unable to cross the Canadian border to visit our cabin so we decided to camp in Voyageurs instead - it was awesome!
Accessible only by boat but a very short trip from the launch, it was a true find when it comes to logistics on the lake (some sites are deep into the park). The site has a sand beach, two tent pads, two bear boxes, a fire ring, open air drop toilet, and a picnic table. We had plenty of room for two tents (one a 6 person Coleman and the other an REI Kingdom 8) and two screened in shelters on the site. Stone's Point is the only campsite on Big American Island so it is very private, although occasionally busy with fishing boats in the calm water directly north. We camped in mid-July and were able to gorge ourselves on fresh blueberries daily (bring pancake mix!), there are several patches within sight of the site. We didn't encounter more than a single deer and a very fat mouse (who lives under the bear boxes) but heard the Lions and timber wolves at night. Rangers confirmed that black bears do live on the island so we were careful to store our food and garbage properly. The worst part were the bugs, biting flies and giant mosquitoes are common on that lake so make sure you pack appropriately and bring a screened shelter if you plan to sit out at night. We camped for 6 days and it rained for 3, which didn't help the bug situation. My one complaint but it's camping in the woods so not surprised.
This is a great little site and if we were needing a place to stay on the MN side again, we would definitely book here again!
