About Minnesota

Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, offers a very diverse landscape. Coniferous forests cover much of the northern portion of Minnesota, with deciduous forest and prairie land sweeping through the center into the south.

The name Minnesota was derived from the Dakota name for the Minnesota River: Minisota, which translates to sky-tinted water.

Minnesota offers water falls, river bluffs, the head waters of the Mississippi River in Itasca State Park, a heard of bison in Blue Mounds State Park, and a cave to explore at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Learn about the life of an iron-ore miner by taking an underground tour at the Soudan Underground Mine or learn about the history and traditions of the Native American culture through interpretive displays and spending the night in a tipi.

The Department of Natural Resources offers over 5,000 campsites within its state park system, as well as thousands of miles of trails. Hiking, backpacking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, horse back riding, biking, snowmobiling, canoeing, swimming, rock climbing, camping, and so much more; Minnesota offers it all to outdoor enthusiasts.

Minnesota offers four full seasons, at times enduring chilly winters and sweltering summers.
