Banning State Park has a very nice self-guided trail called The Banning Quary Trail. The trail is a 1.8 mile path through woodlands, rock formations and ruins that tell the story of the days between 1892 and 1912. The Short Line of the St. Paul-Duluth Railroad rumbled through these lands carrying pink sandstone which was being extracted by hundreds of quarrymen. Most of the trail follows the abandoned railroad which skirts the cliff's edges and runs along the beautiful Kettle River. The park provides a nice self-guided brochure with 17 points of interest and descriptions which you can read as you walk along the trail. The trail is a beautiful, and fun, hike along the river and a thick forest. Some things you can see along the way include ruins of the power house, rock crusher, and cutting house.
